Explosives and Narcotics Detection K9 Division
About Our Detection Services
The dogs deployed in our active workforce have been specifically selected for their high drive and stable temperament. Our canines undergo a rigorous training process that ensures they are capable of working in any environment and through any distraction. While training, our dogs live in the home of our head trainer to ensure they are properly socialized from the beginning of training; they also learn when they are expected to work versus when they are allowed to relax.
Our dogs are taught to search both stationary and moving targets. Once an odor is identified our dogs will give a passive indication by locking onto the source and not moving from that source until the dog is rewarded.
our Handlers
Once the dog’s foundational training is completed and the dog clearly understands the task at hand, the remainder of the training is done with the specific handler the dog will be working with on the job. We insist on the same level of standards from our human handlers as we do our dogs. Our handlers spend time working with their canine partner both at our training facility and in various work environments to build a bond that will continue to strengthen over time. The handlers learn how to read their dog’s body language to understand when he or she is working a scent trail, and are taught how to optimize the number of odors the dog encounters in a given area that is being secured. This is done by utilizing airflow patterns in certain environments and by efficiently working the dog in a clear, consistent pattern through an area.
Certification
When ready, our canine teams are tested and certified through a third-party organization using live explosive odors and real narcotics. This testing is done both routinely once a year and at random to ensure that both our dogs and handlers consistently meet changing industry standards.
After a canine team has been certified, the dog either lives with the handler or remains with our head trainer. Certified canine teams are required to attend training five days a week.
